The U.S. Embassy in Iraq has confirmed that it will continue its operations in Baghdad and the consulate in Erbil despite recent security warnings about potential attacks.

A spokesperson for the embassy told that on June 11, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio ordered the withdrawal of non-emergency government personnel from the embassy in Baghdad and the consulate in Erbil as a precautionary measure. The official emphasized that the highest priority for the U.S. State Department is ensuring the safety and security of American citizens and embassy personnel both in Iraq and abroad.

The spokesperson reaffirmed the United States’ strong commitment to its long-term strategic partnership with Iraq, stating that the embassy in Baghdad and the consulate in Erbil will remain open and continue their work to strengthen this relationship. The U.S. also remains dedicated to advancing its political priorities in Iraq, supporting Iraq’s sovereignty, and maintaining dialogue with Iraqi leaders and citizens.

Earlier on Sunday, the U.S. Embassy issued a security alert warning American citizens in Iraq about increased risks of violence or attacks targeting U.S. interests. The embassy urged all American nationals in Iraq to avoid places frequented by foreigners and large gatherings. It assured that it would closely monitor the security situation and provide updates as necessary.

Meanwhile, Kata’ib Hezbollah in Iraq issued a threat against U.S. interests and military bases in the region, stating that it would target them if Washington intervened militarily in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. The group also sent a message to the Iraqi government and the Coordination Framework.
