American sources revealed that the U.S. nuclear agreement proposal presented to Iran would allow Tehran to conduct limited uranium enrichment at a low level for a specified period, according to Axios News on Monday.
Key Points of the U.S. Proposal
- Iran would be permitted to continue uranium enrichment at up to 3% purity.
- The proposal does not require Iran to dismantle all its nuclear facilities.
- Sanctions would only be lifted once Iran demonstrates "genuine commitment," with verification from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
- Iran would not be allowed to establish new enrichment facilities and would be required to dismantle critical infrastructure related to uranium conversion and processing.
- Iran would also be required to halt research and development on new centrifuge technology.
Iran's Response: "Unworkable" & One-Sided
Earlier on Monday, a senior Iranian diplomat stated that Tehran intends to reject the U.S. proposal, calling it "unworkable" and failing to serve Iran’s interests.
He stressed that the proposal does not reflect any shift in Washington’s stance on uranium enrichment, according to Reuters.
Iranian Officials’ Skepticism
Another Iranian source described the written proposal received in Muscat negotiations as "unrealistic and one-sided," arguing that it does not constitute a fair basis for any potential settlement, according to ISNA News Agency.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai clarified that receiving the proposal through Oman does not imply acceptance.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Saturday that he had received the written U.S. proposal via Oman and that it was under review.
Speculation on a Regional Uranium Enrichment Union
According to U.S. sources, the proposal may include the creation of a regional uranium enrichment union along with sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing not to enrich uranium on its own territory, as previously reported.
Next Steps in Nuclear Negotiations
Iranian officials have consistently emphasized that abandoning uranium enrichment is a crucial issue, despite Washington's persistent demands for restrictions.
A sixth round of indirect U.S.-Iran nuclear talks is expected to take place soon, following the first round on April 12.
