On Wednesday, May 21, two employees of the Israeli Embassy in Washington were killed in a shooting outside the Jewish Museum in the U.S. capital. Israel condemned the attack as an "antisemitic act of terrorism."

Suspect in Custody

U.S. authorities have arrested the perpetrator, who reportedly shouted "Free Palestine" during his apprehension.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem stated on X, "Two members of the Israeli embassy staff were senselessly killed this evening near the Jewish Museum in Washington. We have launched an investigation."

Washington Police Chief Pamela Smith described the incident in a briefing:

"Before the shooting, the suspect was seen pacing outside the museum. He approached a group of four people, drew a handgun, and opened fire. The attack appears to have been carried out by a single individual, who is now in custody."

The suspect, identified as Elias Rodriguez, is 30 years old and from Chicago, Illinois.

Political & Diplomatic Reactions

U.S. President Donald Trump responded on his social network, Truth Social, stating,

"These heinous crimes… fueled by antisemitism, must stop now! There is no place for hatred and intolerance in the United States."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio vowed that authorities would pursue those responsible, calling the attack "a disgraceful act of vile, antisemitic violence." He added on X, "Make no mistake, we will find those responsible and bring them to justice."

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon also issued a statement, describing the shooting as

"an antisemitic terrorist act outside an event held at the Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C."

Danon warned,

"Harming diplomats and the Jewish community cross a red line."
