The Grand Religious Authority in Najaf, Sayyid Ali Sistani, expressed his condolences on Monday for the passing of Pope Francis, emphasizing the late pontiff’s esteemed spiritual standing.

In a statement from Sistani’s office, he said,

"We received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who held a high spiritual status among many nations and was deeply respected by all for his distinguished role in serving peace, promoting tolerance, and expressing solidarity with the oppressed and marginalized across the world."

He added:

"The historic meeting between His Holiness and the Grand Religious Authority in Najaf was an exceptionally significant moment, affirming the essential role of faith in God and His messages, as well as the commitment to noble ethical values in overcoming the great challenges facing humanity today. It underscored the importance of collective efforts to strengthen the culture of peaceful coexistence, reject violence and hatred, and uphold values of harmony based on mutual respect and recognition of rights among adherents of various religions and intellectual traditions."

Sistani continued,

"As the Grand Religious Authority extends its condolences and sympathies to followers of the Catholic Church worldwide in this painful loss, it wishes them patience and solace and prays to Almighty God to grant them and all humanity His boundless mercy, goodness, blessings, and peace."
