French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Wednesday that Paris might recognize a Palestinian state in June, adding that some Middle Eastern countries may, in turn, recognize Israel.
During an interview on France 5, Macron said, "We must move towards recognition (of a Palestinian state). We will do so in the coming months. I am not doing this to please anyone. I will do it because it will be appropriate at some point."
He added, "I also want to participate in collective efforts that enable advocates for Palestine to recognize Israel in return, something many of them do not currently do."
According to Reuters, the Palestinian state has been recognized by nearly 150 countries, although most major Western powers, including the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Japan, have not taken this step.
Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen are among the countries that do not recognize Israel.
Macron stated, "We aim to organize a conference in June in collaboration with Saudi Arabia to finalize the move towards mutual recognition by several countries."
