A senior official in NATO stated that Russia has suffered human losses of approximately 900,000 soldiers since the war in Ukraine began more than three years ago.
According to NATO's official assessments, up to 250,000 soldiers have been killed in the conflict, which began on February 24, 2022. A NATO evaluation indicated that "the battlefield situation remains extremely challenging."
Speaking to the German news agency on the sidelines of a NATO Foreign Ministers' meeting in Brussels, the official said, "While we do not expect a major collapse of Ukrainian defense lines in the coming months, even if Moscow continues to advance, we believe that Russia will keep increasing pressure along the frontlines and on Ukraine overall."
The official noted that Russia continues to rely on a strategy of "heavy losses in exchange for slow gains," referring to recent territorial advances made by Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, including in Toretsk and near Pokrovsk.
According to the official, Russia suffered 35,140 fatalities in February alone this year.
