Transitional Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa announced on Saturday the formation of a new government, marking a significant development in the transition process after decades of Assad family rule and an improvement in Syria's relations with the West.
The new government includes the appointment of Mohammed Yaser Barniya as Minister of Finance and Hind Kabawat, a Christian, as Minister of Social Affairs and Labor.
Both Marhaf Abu Qasra retained his position as Minister of Defense and Asaad Al-Shaibani as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the new government.
A caretaker government had been formed following Assad's ousting in December during a swift offensive by opposition fighters.
In January, Al-Sharaa was declared interim president and pledged to form an inclusive transitional government responsible for rebuilding Syria's collapsed public institutions and managing the country until elections, which he stated could be organized within five years.
The new government will not have a prime minister, as Al-Sharaa is expected to head the executive authority.
This month, Syria issued a constitutional declaration designed as a foundation for the transitional period led by Al-Sharaa. The declaration maintained the central role of Islamic law while guaranteeing women's rights and freedom of expression.
