The U.S. Embassy in Damascus issued a call on Saturday for all American citizens in Syria to leave the country immediately, warning of an increased likelihood of attacks during the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
In an official statement published on the embassy's website, the U.S. State Department cautioned that potential attacks could target embassies, international organizations, and Syrian public institutions in Damascus. The threats may include individual or armed attacks or the use of explosive devices.
The statement reaffirmed that the travel advisory for Syria remains at Level Four: "Do Not Travel," due to risks associated with terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, hostage-taking, armed conflict, and arbitrary detention.
The embassy noted that the United States suspended its diplomatic operations in Damascus in 2012, meaning it cannot provide routine or emergency consular services to its citizens in Syria.
The statement explained that the Czech Republic represents U.S. interests in Syria and urged American citizens requiring emergency assistance to contact the U.S. Interests Section at the Czech Embassy.
