German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser canceled her planned visit to Syria on Thursday due to security warnings about a terrorist threat, as reported by the German newspaper Bild.
The newspaper noted that Faeser was scheduled to accompany her Austrian counterpart, Gerhard Karner, with the delegation initially planning to depart from Jordan this morning and route to the Syrian capital, Damascus.
A spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry stated that the decision to cancel was made "based on specific warnings from German security agencies about a terrorist threat," indicating that the potential threat might target both the German and Austrian delegations.
The spokesperson added that Faeser made the decision in consultation with Austrian Minister Karner, despite the visit being under strict security measures and not officially announced.
The visit was intended to include meetings with two ministers from Syria's transitional government, as well as representatives from UN relief organizations, to discuss security issues and the file of returning Syrian refugees.
