U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed measures to end the Ukraine war during a phone call on Tuesday that lasted over two hours.
Dan Scavino, Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House, stated that "the phone call between the two leaders went well," noting that "the leaders spoke by phone starting at 10 a.m. local time on Tuesday, March 18.
Trump hopes to persuade Putin to accept a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire and move toward a permanent resolution of the three-year-long conflict.
Ukraine had previously agreed to a ceasefire in what has become the largest conflict in Europe since World War II, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries, millions displaced, and cities reduced to rubble.
Trump aims to secure progress toward a long-term peace plan, which, according to him, could include territorial concessions from Kyiv and control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine.
