U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance acknowledged that the 2003 American invasion of Iraq led to the destruction of one of the world's most historic Christian communities, warning against repeating the same scenario in Syria and emphasizing the need to protect minorities there.
In an interview with Fox News, Vance stated that the U.S. administration must "remember who they are dealing with in Syria and ensure the protection of these historic communities there." He stressed that the recent events affecting minorities in Syria "look very bad" and that the U.S. is working to assess the severity of the situation and determine whether the incidents involving minorities in Syria are isolated or amount to genocide.
Vance added that Washington is in communication with its allies and is taking undisclosed measures to protect minorities in Syria, including Christians and Druze. He emphasized that the U.S. will not send troops to Syria but has diplomatic and economic tools it can use to safeguard these groups.
Concluding his remarks, the Vice President said, "Our invasion of Iraq led to the destruction of one of the greatest historic Christian communities in the world. We do not want to allow that to happen again."
