Iraq Off the List: 43 Countries Targeted by Travel Ban or Restrictions to the U.S.

Amid Reports of New U.S. Travel Ban Preparations, Details Emerge

Sources and an internal memo have revealed new details about the U.S. administration's preparations for imposing a travel ban on several countries. The administration of President Donald Trump is reportedly considering comprehensive travel restrictions on citizens of 41 countries as part of a new ban.

The memo indicates that these countries are divided into three groups. The first group includes ten countries—Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Cuba, and North Korea—facing a complete suspension of visas.

The second group consists of five countries—Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, and South Sudan—that will face partial restrictions affecting tourist, student, and other immigration visas, with some exceptions.

The third group includes 26 countries, such as Belarus, Pakistan, and Turkmenistan, which may face partial visa issuance suspensions if their governments fail to "address deficiencies within 60 days," according to the memo.

An American official warned that changes to the list are possible, as it still requires approval from the administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as reported by Reuters on Saturday.

During his first term, Trump imposed a travel ban on travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, a policy that underwent several revisions before being upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018.

In his current term, Trump issued an executive order on January 20 to intensify security screenings for any foreigner seeking entry into the United States to identify national security threats. The order directed members of the administration to submit a list by March 21 of countries whose travel should be partially or fully suspended due to "severely inadequate screening and vetting information."

These directives are part of a broader immigration campaign launched by Trump at the start of his second presidential term.
