Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, announced on Wednesday that negotiations with the current U.S. administration "will not lead to the lifting of sanctions on Iran.
According to state media, Khamenei described U.S. President Donald Trump's call for negotiations as "a deception of public opinion."
During a meeting with students on Wednesday evening, Khamenei stated, some people inside the country constantly insist on the issue of negotiations: Why don't you respond? Why don't you negotiate? Why don't you sit with America? Sit for negotiations.
He continued, "I want to clarify that if the goal of negotiations is to lift sanctions, negotiating with this U.S. administration will not achieve that. It will only make the sanctions more complicated and increase the pressures. Negotiating with this administration will only escalate the pressures.
Khamenei added, "A few days ago, during my meeting with officials, I mentioned that the U.S. administration is presenting new demands, conditions, and increasing expectations, making the situation more complicated than it is today. Therefore, negotiations will not solve any problem or untangle any knot.
In this context, an Emirati diplomat, reportedly carrying a message from U.S. President Trump, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday.
Last week, President Trump acknowledged that he had written a letter to Khamenei in an attempt to initiate talks regarding Iran's nuclear program.
