According to "XDA Developers," Microsoft may discontinue the Skype application for Windows starting in May. The latest preview version of Skype for Windows includes a line stating, "Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available, and users can conduct messaging and voice calls via the Teams app.
Microsoft has not officially commented on the matter yet or announced its plans regarding the popular Skype service.
Skype was launched in 2003 and remained one of the most prominent services for messaging and video calls for years. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion and integrated it into many of its software products, including Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox applications.
Over the past decade, Skype underwent numerous changes and updates to compete with services like iMessage and other messaging and internet calling platforms. However, its popularity has declined in recent years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many users transitioned to more modern applications.
