The Pentagon announced in a memo that the U.S. military will begin expelling transgender service members within 30 days unless they receive an exemption after each case is individually reviewed.
The memo, published by the Department of Defense as part of a lawsuit, stated that "service members who have a current diagnosis, history of, or symptoms consistent with gender dysphoria will be processed for separation from military service," according to AFP.
However, it noted the possibility of considering exemptions for some "on a case-by-case basis, provided there is a compelling government interest in retaining the individual who directly supports combat capabilities.
Since returning to the White House on January 20, U.S. President Donald Trump has promised changes in the Pentagon.
Trump also tasked American billionaire Elon Musk, who was appointed as the head of the Government Efficiency Department responsible for reducing federal agency expenses and staff, with reviewing the Department of Defense budget, which sparked controversy at the time in the country.
