U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he may meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin "very soon" to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.

In his conversation with reporters, Trump emphasized that he is working hard to achieve peace, indicating that he believes both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are willing to stop the fighting.

Trump's remarks come as the United States and Russia prepare to hold preliminary talks in Saudi Arabia in the coming days as part of diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

American officials said on Saturday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Whitkov will travel to Saudi Arabia to attend the meeting.

Rubio is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia as part of his first tour to the Middle East, which began with his arrival in Israel on Saturday evening.

This announcement comes just days after Trump revealed that he spoke with Putin for the first time since returning to office and that they agreed to start talks on a ceasefire in Ukraine.

On Saturday, Rubio had a phone call with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, during which he confirmed "President Trump's commitment to finding a solution to the conflict in Ukraine," according to the U.S. Department of State.
