Pope Francis has called on government representatives and organizations working against human trafficking to unite in combating this complex phenomenon, which derives its persistence from wars, conflicts, famines, and the impacts of climate change. He urged for global responses and joint efforts to address this issue.
In a message on the occasion of the 11th World Day of Prayer and Reflection against Human Trafficking, titled "Ambassadors of Hope: Together Against Human Trafficking," the Holy Father questioned how to maintain hope in the face of millions of children, women, youth, and displaced persons trapped in this modern form of slavery.
The Pope affirmed that maintaining hope amidst this problem is only possible by looking to Christ, our hope, as in Him lies the strength with a renewed commitment that overcomes problems and tragedies. Thus, more than a glimmer of light shines in the darkness, and these lights come together to illuminate the night until dawn.
Pope Francis stated that the youth set an example in their struggle against this type of trafficking around the world, insisting on being "Ambassadors of Hope" with perseverance and love. He emphasized that it is possible to avoid normalizing injustice and to overcome the belief that some phenomena cannot be eradicated.
The Holy Father believes that the Spirit of God helps those who wish to promote initiatives aimed at weakening the economic and criminal means seeking profit through human trafficking and exploitation. He added that the Spirit teaches us to first listen to those who have experienced these crimes by being close to them and showing compassion.
