Meta Platforms, the American company that owns Facebook and Instagram, has agreed to pay approximately $25 million to settle a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump regarding the suspension of his accounts after several of his supporters attacked the Capitol building in Washington on January 6, 2021.
Trump had filed lawsuits against Twitter, now known as X, Meta, and Alphabet, the owner of Google, as well as the heads of those companies, claiming they unlawfully silenced conservative viewpoints.
Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts were suspended following the Capitol events and a speech in which he repeated false claims that his defeat in the presidential election was due to widespread fraud.
Of the settlement amount, $22 million will go to the Trump Presidential Library Fund, while the remaining amount will be allocated for legal fees and other plaintiffs in the case.
Meta, the owner of Facebook, filed a notice regarding the settlement in a federal court in San Francisco.
