U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed on Thursday that the implementation of the Gaza agreement will begin on Sunday, noting that "the full implementation of the Gaza agreement is necessary.
This comes as negotiations are still ongoing to resolve some outstanding points, despite the announcement of a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel yesterday.
In a press conference, Blinken said, "We have reached an agreement on Gaza after 15 months of suffering," adding, "We are awaiting the release of Americans as part of the Gaza deal.
He explained that this deal is a testament to the strength of U.S. diplomacy, indicating that the United States has become stronger in facing challenges.
The ceasefire agreement is set to be implemented in three phases. The first phase of the deal will last six weeks and will see the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
It also includes the release of 33 Israelis, encompassing all women, children, and men over the age of 50, as well as Americans Keith Siegel and Saguy Dekel-Chen.
Negotiations for the implementation of the second phase of the agreement are expected to begin on the sixteenth day of the first phase. This phase is anticipated to include the release of all remaining Israeli prisoners, a permanent ceasefire, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza in exchange for the release of over a thousand Palestinian prisoners.
The third phase will involve the return of all remaining bodies and the commencement of the reconstruction of Gaza under the supervision of Egypt, Qatar, and the United Nations.
