Al-Sudani Calls from Tehran for Cooperation on Organizing a Smooth Transition Process in Syria.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani called today, Wednesday (January 8, 2025), for all countries to cooperate with all parties to achieve stability in Syria through a smooth transition process.

During a press conference with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian following discussions in Tehran, which he is visiting for one day, Sudani emphasized the importance of adopting the language of dialogue and rejecting the language of threats to solve problems between countries.

Sudani added, "The only way to stability in the region is to stop this destructive war in Gaza and ensure the Palestinian people's right to self-determination," noting, "We reaffirm Iraq's firm stance on efforts to continue the ceasefire in Lebanon and Iraq's role and readiness to rebuild Lebanon and Gaza.

He continued, "We discussed the latest developments in Syria. Stability in Syria is the key to stability in the region. Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity must be preserved," pointing out that "Baghdad is keen to build balanced relations with all regional and international parties in a way that serves everyone.

Sudani stated during the press conference, "We reaffirm our firm stance in condemning the genocide committed by Israel in Gaza and the West Bank.

Regarding Syria, Sudani said, "I agreed with the Iranian president on the importance of stability in Syria through a comprehensive solution that preserves its territorial integrity," noting, "We respect the will of the Syrian people and support any political framework they choose for themselves.

For his part, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that his country shares common concerns with Iraq regarding developments in Syria following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Pezeshkian explained during the press conference, "Iran and Iraq have common concerns regarding developments in Syria," adding, "The threat of terrorism is a shared concern with Iraq and requires more wisdom and cooperation between the two countries," pointing out that Iran calls for regional stability, and Iraq is a priority in that.

The Iranian president continued during the joint press conference following discussions with Sudani, "The threat of terrorism and the possibility of reactivating terrorist cells are concerns for both Iran and Iraq," noting that "Iraq is an important country and a strategic partner for Iran."
