The new administration in Syria announced on Monday the appointment of Maisa Sabrin as the governor of the Central Bank of Syria.
A Syrian official stated that Maisa Sabrin, who holds a master's degree and a doctorate in accounting, is the first woman to hold this high-ranking position in the history of the Syrian financial institution.
With this appointment, Sabrin becomes the first woman to lead the institution in its more than 70-year history, succeeding Mohammad Issam Hazima, who was appointed by the deposed President Bashar al-Assad as the central bank governor in 2021.
Before her appointment to this position, Sabrin held several prestigious roles in the central bank, including the First Deputy Governor and the supervising director since 2018, as well as the head of the office oversight department in the bank.
She was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Damascus Securities Exchange, representing the central bank, before assuming her new role.
