Kurdish Party Meets Ocalan Detained in Turkish Prison.

A delegation from the pro-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party met with Abdullah Öcalan, the leader and founder of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), in his prison on Imrali Island, Turkey.

The Turkish authorities allowed the Kurdish delegation this visit as part of an initiative by the ruling coalition to end the conflict that has lasted for more than four decades.

The delegation consists of senior party members Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Pervin Buldan. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced on Friday that the Ministry of Justice approved the request from the pro-PKK People's Democratic Party to visit the imprisoned leader and founder of the terrorist group, Abdullah Öcalan.

In October, the People's Alliance, led by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) under Devlet Bahçeli, issued a historic call to "end the decades-long terrorism by the PKK once and for all.

Bahçeli called for granting the imprisoned leader Öcalan a conditional hearing and allowing him to speak freely in parliament to urge PKK supporters to lay down their arms.

Erdoğan supported Bahçeli's statements, describing them as a "historic window" to achieve the vision of a "terror-free Turkey.

Öcalan agreed to the unprecedented call under certain conditions.

Öcalan, as quoted by People's Equality and Democracy Party member and his nephew Ömer Öcalan, said, "If the conditions are suitable, I have the theoretical and practical ability to move this process from the level of conflict and violence to a political and legal level.

The PKK is classified as a terrorist organization by Ankara, the European Union, and the United States.

PKK leader Öcalan has been imprisoned on Imrali Island off Istanbul since 1999.
