The spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasool, announced on Monday the movement of "armored units" from the army towards the country's western border, in light of the attacks by armed opposition factions in neighboring Syria.

Rasool explained that these units will be stationed along the open border area from Al-Qa'im in the south to the border with Jordan.

This step follows the Iraqi authorities' reinforcement of the northwestern sector of Nineveh Province with armored and mechanized units, according to Rasool.

On Sunday evening, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, chaired an emergency meeting of the National Security Council to study and follow up on developments in Syria.

During the meeting, the measures taken by Iraq on the border with Syria were discussed, including intensifying intelligence and information efforts and countering the movements of opposition groups inside Syria.

Iraq has placed all military sectors on high alert following the security and military developments in Syria, accompanied by diplomatic moves aimed at "distancing the country from what is happening in Syria."
