The Ecuadorian Football Federation announced on Tuesday the death of Ecuador national team player and FC Cincinnati player, Marco Angulo, due to injuries sustained in a car accident that also claimed the life of his former youth teammate, Roberto Cabezas.

Angulo, who was 22 years old, was in a car that crashed into a metal barrier on a highway southeast of the capital, Quito, on October 7, resulting in the death of the driver and Cabezas, a player for Independiente Juniors.

Angulo suffered a serious head injury and lung bruises, and he was placed in an induced coma until his death on Monday evening, according to the newspaper "El Universo." Angulo played with the team "LDU Quito," the Ecuadorian league champion, on loan from the American club Cincinnati.

The Ecuadorian Federation mourned the late player, saying: "Angulo defended our country's jersey with loyalty and dedication at every opportunity he had." He was not only an exceptional player but also a wonderful teammate, and his departure has deeply affected us.

Angulo, the midfielder, represented Ecuador in the U-17 and U-20 youth teams and wore the national team's jersey for the first time in a friendly match against Iraq in November 2020. He also participated in another friendly match against Australia in March 2023.
