The world is awaiting Israel's response to Iran after the latter bombed several Israeli sites at the beginning of October in retaliation for Israel's assassination of Hezbollah's Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, and a prominent Iranian official in airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut last September. The expected targets include oil sites and other military locations.
But the new aspect regarding the expected target banks this time is the addition of the homes of senior Iranian officials as potential targets for an Israeli attack, following the recent attempt to target the home of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a drone.
Channel 14 reported that Israeli officials said that in preparation for an attack on Iran, considerations for responding to the attempted assassination of Netanyahu and his family will also be included among the targets after a drone targeted his home in Caesarea.
The channel reported, "The plans have already been put on the table for decision-makers, and the military and Mossad have presented the plans to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense. Israel has a wide range of options, such as nuclear and oil facilities, military, and government targets." And at the end of last week, the homes of senior officials in Iran were added to the target bank.
Iran warned on Monday that the United States would bear "full responsibility" if Israel launched a retaliatory attack, following U.S. President Joe Biden's announcement that he had been briefed on Israeli plans in this regard.
The permanent representative of Iran to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, described Biden's statements as "extremely concerning and provocative" in a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and the Swiss presidency of the UN Security Council.
The U.S. president responded with "yes" when a reporter asked him last Friday if he had been well-informed about the timing and manner of Israel's response to the missile strike launched by Iran on October 1.
Iran launched around two hundred missiles at Israel that day in response to the Israeli strikes on Lebanon that resulted in the deaths of Iranian Revolutionary Guard General Abbas Nilforoushan and Nasrallah at the end of September.
Israel, which is waging war against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, has vowed to respond to the Iranian strike.
In the letter, Iravani stated, "This incendiary statement (by Biden) raises deep concern, as it indicates the United States' implicit approval and explicit support for an unlawful Israeli military aggression against Iran."
He added, "Therefore, the United States will bear full responsibility for its role in inciting any aggressive actions by Israel against Iran," considering that this would constitute "a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter."
