On Sunday, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the Israeli army is recruiting a number of African asylum seekers for military service in the Gaza Strip, in exchange for promises of granting them permanent residency in Israel.

The newspaper stated that "the army is attempting to entice these individuals by offering salaries equivalent to those received by Israeli soldiers."

It added that "African recruits in the Israeli army have already participated in well-known operations in the Gaza Strip."
