Time is running out… The Coordination Framework meeting ends without naming a new Iraqi prime minister.

As Iraqis awaited the outcome of last night’s meeting of the Shiite Coordination Framework regarding the announcement of a nominee to form the new Iraqi government, the gathering ended without an agreement.

Sources told Al Arabiya/Al Hadath on Saturday that the meeting concluded without resolving the issue of selecting a candidate. They added that current Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al‑Sudani proposed two names for the premiership: Hadi al‑Amiri and Haider al‑Abadi.

Previously, several other names had been circulated, including Nouri al‑Maliki, al‑Sudani, Basim al‑Badri, Rasim al‑Awadi, Mohammed al‑Daraji, Adnan al‑Zurfi, Haider al‑Abadi, and others whose names were not publicly disclosed.

For his part, Iraqi President Nazar Amidi urged the Shiite Coordination Framework to expedite the nomination of the largest parliamentary bloc’s candidate for forming the government. In a post on his X account yesterday, he said:
“We stress the need to adhere to the constitutional timelines for presenting the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc, as this is a constitutional entitlement that cannot be delayed and a national responsibility that falls on everyone.”

He also emphasized the importance of “speeding up this process, which strengthens political stability, ensures the proper functioning of institutions, and meets citizens’ expectations for a government capable of performing its duties and serving their interests—especially in a sensitive period that requires prioritizing the country’s higher interests.”

The constitutional deadline for naming a candidate to form the government will expire next Monday, according to the constitutional timeline that began after the election of the president on the 11th of this month, which triggers a 15‑day period.
