The Ministry of Water Resources announced that high water inflows have been recorded in the Tigris, Euphrates, and Diyala rivers as a result of recent waves of rain and flooding across the country. These inflows have contributed to rising water levels in dams and reservoirs, allowing for increased water releases into river channels.
In its statement, the ministry confirmed that it is implementing an integrated operational and storage plan to absorb these inflows. The plan aims to maximize water storage and compensate for shortages caused by years of drought and significant reservoir depletion, while maintaining a carefully managed balance between storage and releases to ensure smooth water flow in the rivers.
The ministry urged citizens—especially those living near or encroaching on riverbanks, particularly along the Diyala River within restricted zones—to follow safety procedures and stay away from river channels and protective embankment areas during the implementation of the water‑release plan. It stressed the need to remove encroachments and obstacles that hinder water flow.
The statement also noted that information received from the Turkish side indicates an increase in water releases from Turkish dams toward the Tigris and Euphrates. The ministry affirmed that all its technical teams are fully prepared to manage these inflows efficiently in a way that strengthens water storage, supports and revitalizes the marshes, and improves the environmental conditions of the Shatt al‑Arab.
