After the position of Trump on al-Maliki… New U.S. Messages to Baghdad Regarding Government Formation.

President Donald Trump’s envoy to Iraq, Mark Savaya, commented on Trump’s rejection of the nomination of State of Law Coalition leader Nouri al-Maliki for the new Iraqi government, affirming Washington’s support for a political path that prevents repeating past mistakes.

Savaya wrote in a post on the X platform: “Under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, let’s make Iraq great again.”

On Tuesday evening, Trump had posted on Truth Social that al-Maliki’s return to the premiership “must not be allowed,” arguing that Iraq “slipped into poverty and chaos” during his previous tenure. He added that the United States would stop providing assistance to Iraq if al-Maliki were elected again, warning that such a move would undermine Iraq’s chances for “success, prosperity, or freedom.” He concluded, “Let’s make Iraq great again.”

In a subsequent tweet, Savaya praised the stance of U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson, affirming continued efforts, saying, “Together, we will make Iraq great again.”

For his part, Wilson wrote that he was grateful for the support of Trump and Savaya’s efforts regarding Iraq and for working with them “to liberate Iraq from Iran.” He stressed that the U.S. position under Trump is “clear and non-negotiable,” and that “Iranian influence in Iraq will no longer be tolerated.”

Wilson emphasized that the new Iraqi government must serve the interests of the Iraqi people alone, urging that past mistakes not be repeated. He outlined several demands, including disarming Iran-aligned armed groups within six to twelve months, immediately and systematically confronting corruption and money laundering, establishing an independent judiciary free from partisan or political influence, cutting Iranian influence in Iraqi affairs, removing Iranian advisers and proxies from state institutions, organizing the role of the Popular Mobilization Forces within the official armed forces under unified command and control, ensuring the competence and loyalty of cabinet members to the state, and committing to building strategic economic and security relations with the United States.

Wilson concluded by saying that Savaya will play a decisive role in helping Iraq restore its sovereignty and stability, affirming, “No more Iranian influence in Iraq… Free Iraq from Iran.”
