Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Friday proposed a joint nomination with Armenia for U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, following the signing of an agreement between the two rivals aimed at ending decades of conflict.

Speaking at the summit held at the White House, Aliyev said, “Perhaps I can agree with Prime Minister [Nikol] Pashinyan to make a joint appeal to the Nobel Committee to award President Trump the Nobel Peace Prize.”

Pashinyan responded, “I believe President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, and we will advocate for it and promote it,” according to Agence France-Presse.

President Trump stated that under the agreements signed Friday at the White House, Azerbaijan and Armenia commit to a permanent ceasefire and to respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

During a trilateral ceremony at the White House with Azerbaijani President Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan, Trump said, “Thanks to this agreement, we have finally achieved peace. We just left the Oval Office, where we signed extensive documents and critical provisions of the agreement.”

He added, “Armenia and Azerbaijan commit to permanently halting all combat operations, establishing trade and diplomatic relations, and respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Azerbaijani President Aliyev expressed confidence in Armenia and Azerbaijan’s readiness to show courage and responsibility for reconciliation, which would allow them to turn the page on confrontation and ensure peace in the South Caucasus.
