Amid the escalation between armed groups and the Syrian regime, Iraq has announced raising its military readiness and fortifying its borders as required by the situation.
Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet Al-Abbasi visited the border strip accompanied by high-ranking military leaders, highlighting the high level of readiness of the Iraqi forces.
President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, during his meeting with the Iraqi National Security Advisor, pointed out that the developments in Syria and their impact on the region as a whole are of great concern, praising the level of Iraqi preparedness in protecting and enhancing the borders.
Steps Taken by Iraq to Secure the Borders Baghdad has witnessed successive meetings of military leaders, with the National Security Council, chaired by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, holding an emergency meeting.
During the meeting, Al-Sudani received a briefing from the Border Forces Commander and was updated on the situation and fortifications along the Iraqi-Syrian border strip.
According to a statement from his office, Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of continuing to secure the borders, intensifying intelligence and information efforts, directing the presence of military leaders in the field, and monitoring operational sectors, especially on the shared borders.
The Ministry of Defense has reinforced the Iraqi army with armored vehicles in the Al-Qa'im district in Anbar province near Jordan after strengthening positions at the border with Syria as well.
The Border Forces Command announced its technical, logistical, and military measures to prevent any attacks, even accidental ones, from the Syrian side.
In a press conference, Border Forces Commander Major General Mohammed Al-Saeedi mentioned that the borders with Syria are the most secure and equipped with smart thermal cameras operating around the clock to monitor any movements.
Al-Saeedi added that border control includes a series of measures, such as the establishment of fortifications and barriers along the border, including a trench three meters wide and deep, a three-meter-high berm, concertina wire barriers, BRC (barbed wire barriers), and a concrete wall that will reach 300 kilometers in length.
He explained that the distance between security points does not exceed one kilometer, an unprecedented achievement in the history of border protection.
The entire border is covered by a smart surveillance system with thermal cameras transmitting images to the regional headquarters and the main headquarters in Baghdad, monitoring and documenting parts of Syrian and Iraqi territory, according to the same source. Al-Saeedi pointed out that the first aspect of the fortifications includes a system of drones and thermal binoculars, while the other aspect involves the combat readiness of military units.
