U.S. Embassy Renews Call for Its Citizens to Leave Iraq Immediately Warns of Threats to Foreigners Hotels in the Region.

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad warned American citizens on Friday of serious security threats, including the possibility of attacks targeting hotels frequented by foreigners in the Kurdistan Region, urging its nationals to leave the country immediately and safely.

In a statement, the embassy confirmed that “the U.S. government is evaluating all available options to assist its citizens in departing the Middle East,” stressing the “need for those currently in Iraq to leave as soon as possible.” It also advised those who choose to remain to prepare for extended periods of sheltering in secure locations and to maintain sufficient supplies of food, water, and medication.

The statement noted that commercial flights within Iraq are currently suspended, while land routes toward Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey remain open, though border crossings may close without prior notice. It also outlined the procedures required to obtain entry or transit visas for these countries.

The U.S. mission issued a “shelter‑in‑place” advisory, urging Americans to stay inside their homes or hotels, keep away from windows, and avoid areas of protests or unrest—particularly near the southern bank of the July 14 Bridge and Tahrir Square in Baghdad—warning of the continued threat of rockets and drones in Iraqi airspace.

The embassy added that Iran and armed groups aligned with it “continue to pose a significant threat to public safety, with ongoing calls for attacks against U.S. interests.” It urged its citizens to maintain a low profile and avoid gatherings, noting that the International Zone in central Baghdad is closed and that access to the embassy building or the consulate in Erbil is not possible under current security measures.
