On Monday, Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani renewed his call for forming a regional and international coalition against drug trafficking. He also directed that reporting drug-related crimes and confiscating narcotics be included in a rewards mechanism
This came during his chairing of an extensive meeting dedicated to discussing and reviewing the government measures taken regarding the drug control file in Iraq. The meeting was attended by the Ministers of Interior, Health, and Justice, as well as the Chairman and members of the Parliamentary Committee on Drugs and Psychoactive Substances
During the meeting, a working paper presented by the head of the parliamentary anti-drug committee was discussed. The paper included several points, such as reviewing the operational procedures presented by the Ministries of Health, Interior, and Justice, the role of governors, the potential amendment of the drug control law, and the possibility of enhancing the specialized anti-drug units within the Ministry of Interior
The Prime Minister directed that this meeting be held every two months to monitor implementation and review previous decisions made by the Council of Ministers on this matter, as well as decisions by the Higher Coordination Committee between the provinces. This includes allocating land in each province to establish advanced centers for rehabilitating addicts and assessing progress made
Al-Sudani emphasized that reporting drug-related crimes and confiscating narcotics would be included in the rewards mechanism. He also affirmed the provision of necessary resources for security work against drugs and stressed the government's openness to all organizations, activists, and any parties concerned with protecting our youth from the danger of drugs
