The Asharq Al‑Awsat newspaper reported on Wednesday that a senior White House official reaffirmed the U.S. administration’s rejection of Nouri al‑Maliki’s nomination for the position of prime minister in Iraq.
The official explained that “a government dominated by Iranian influence would not be able to put Iraq’s interests first, keep the country away from regional conflicts, or strengthen a mutually beneficial partnership with the United States.”
