The German army has temporarily relocated a number of its soldiers from the Iraqi city of Erbil following rising tensions in the Middle East. The Ministry of Defense confirmed that the decision was made in coordination with international partners. The move comes amid U.S. military activity and threats from President Donald Trump against Iran.
A spokesperson for the German Defense Ministry told AFP that dozens of soldiers were transferred out of the Erbil base, leaving behind only the personnel necessary to maintain operational capabilities.
The spokesperson added that the relocation decision was taken “in coordination with international partners.”
The German official did not specify the source of the tensions, but Washington is mobilizing forces in the Middle East, while President Donald Trump is signaling the possibility of military action against Iran.
German soldiers had been deployed to Erbil as part of an international mission to train local Iraqi forces.
