Trump said the two countries share a strong security partnership and are working together to “combat dangerous drug gangs and deport illegal migrants and gang members from the United States.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I held a highly important meeting with Honduran President Nasry Asfura, and we have a close security partnership.”
Trump noted that “once I gave Nasry Asfura my endorsement, he won the presidential election in Honduras.”
The conservative politician and businessman was sworn in as president of Honduras last month after a heated election marred by accusations of fraud and political tensions fueled by U.S. involvement, according to Reuters.
Trump had previously voiced explicit support for the right‑wing candidate during the 2025 Honduran presidential race, describing him as “a strong ally” in confronting “communist drug traffickers” in the region.
Asfura won the presidential election in December 2025 after a tight race, and he pledged to sever relations with Venezuela—further solidifying his alliance with the Trump administration.
This alliance is part of Trump’s broader strategy to expand his influence in Central America through right‑leaning partners.
