U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham warned the Syrian government of imposing “harsh sanctions” due to its targeting of the Kurds, affirming that he will introduce legislation to punish parties hostile to them. He stressed the importance of the Kurds as a key ally in the fight against ISIS, noting that the bill will receive bipartisan support in the United States.
The Republican senator cautioned against “threats targeting the Kurds in Syria” and pledged to present “legislation that imposes sanctions on parties hostile to them.”
Graham said, “I am following with deep concern the deterioration of the situation in Syria, as the Kurds are threatened by the new Syrian government allied with Turkey.”
He added, “America’s reputation and national security interests will face disaster if we abandon the Kurds, who are the main ally in eliminating the ISIS caliphate.”
Graham explained, “This week I will introduce a bill aimed at imposing harsh sanctions on any government or group hostile to the Kurds. I believe such a law will enjoy strong bipartisan support and must include effective provisions to ensure its implementation.”
Earlier, Senator Graham had hinted at seeking to reimpose “Caesar Act” sanctions in an “even harsher form” if Syrian government forces continued advancing north toward the city of Raqqa.
It is worth noting that Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa had previously affirmed, during a phone call with Kurdistan Democratic Party leader Masoud Barzani, that the political and civil rights of the Kurds are guaranteed.
