Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani confirmed that the transfer of ISIS detainees from Syria to Iraq is a temporary step aimed at protecting national and regional security. He called for these detainees to be tried in their own countries.
The second batch of prisoners, of various nationalities, has begun to be transferred by U.S. forces to Iraq, with the process expected to continue for several days. The first batch included 150 members, among them leaders and Europeans.
On Sunday, Sudani stressed the need for the concerned countries to take responsibility for their citizens who are ISIS members and bring them to trial so they receive fair punishment, according to sources.
He further explained that “Baghdad has demonstrated its responsibility and its ability to provide the correct measures that guarantee preventing terrorist activity.”
