Belgium Declares Emergency at Its Oldest and Largest Nuclear Power Plant.

Belgium’s Emergency Operations Center announced that firefighters had begun operations at the Tihange nuclear power plant in Liège Province following a hydrochloric acid leak.

The center reported that the alert was received at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, indicating a hydrochloric acid spill at the Tihange facility.

Emergency services confirmed that firefighting teams remained on site and were preparing to enter the affected area.

According to the energy company Engie, the leak occurred in a container that had already been placed in a containment basin as a precautionary measure. The company emphasized that there was no threat to public safety.

The Tihange nuclear power plant, located near the city of Huy on the Meuse River, houses pressurized water reactors and is one of Belgium’s oldest and largest nuclear facilities. It plays a vital role in the country’s energy supply.
