On Saturday, Chief of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, affirmed that the first session of the new Iraqi Parliament, scheduled for December 29, 2025, must conclude with the election of the Speaker and their two deputies. He emphasized that any postponement or extension of this session is neither constitutionally nor legally permissible.
This statement came during Zaidan’s meeting with Bafel Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), according to a statement from the Supreme Judicial Council.
The council’s statement noted that the meeting underscored the importance of adhering to constitutional timelines for electing the three presidencies, ensuring the completion of both the legislative and executive branches.
Zaidan stressed that the inaugural parliamentary session on December 29 must result in the selection of the Speaker and their deputies. He also highlighted the necessity of naming a presidential candidate within the constitutional deadline of 30 days following the election of the parliamentary leadership.
Meanwhile, the National Political Council, which includes Sunni political forces that won in the elections, is witnessing accelerated political activity to announce a nominee for the Speaker of Parliament. These efforts have been described as positive, focusing on parliamentary leadership and the rights of the Sunni component.
This comes in parallel with movements by the Shiite Coordination Framework, which has reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional deadlines and aims to finalize the nomination of a prime minister within two weeks.
President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid has officially set December 29 as the date for the first session of the new Iraqi Parliament.
