UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday praised Iraq’s courage and determination in overcoming terrorism, noting that the country now enjoys peace and security.
Speaking at a joint press conference with caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani, Guterres said, “We have witnessed Iraq’s courage, resilience, and determination in defeating terrorism,” emphasizing that the UN mission’s goal was to “support Iraq and its government in facing challenges.”
He added, “Iraq today is different from the past. It enjoys security and stability and has become a normal state. The entire world must recognize this.” He also expressed the UN’s appreciation for “Iraq’s commitment to repatriating its citizens from the Al-Hol camp in Syria.”
