Michael Regas, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Resource Management, has arrived in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on a visit aimed at strengthening the partnership between Baghdad and Washington and supporting joint efforts to enhance sovereignty, stability, and prosperity in the country.
Regas was received at Baghdad International Airport by Joshua Harris, the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq, according to a post by the embassy on the X platform.
The post stated that the visit aims to deepen U.S.-Iraq relations through engagement with leaders and local communities to support shared goals focused on sovereignty and prosperity.
A U.S. State Department statement issued on November 25 confirmed that Regas would hold a series of meetings with senior Iraqi officials to discuss political, economic, and security cooperation, as well as to review the operations of U.S. diplomatic facilities in Iraq.
According to the statement, Regas will also participate in the inauguration of the new U.S. Consulate General in Erbil as part of steps that, according to Washington, reaffirm its long-term commitment to supporting Iraq and the U.S. partnership with the Kurdistan Region.
