U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday his intention to meet with New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
In a press statement, Trump said that Mamdani had requested a meeting at the White House and that efforts were underway to arrange it. “The mayor of New York wants to meet, and we will resolve matters,” he stated.
He added, “We want everything to go smoothly in New York.”
Trump called on Mamdani to establish a new relationship with Washington and to show more respect, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the city government and the federal administration.
The White House, however, clarified that no date has been set for the meeting yet.
This announcement comes after Mamdani’s historic election as the first Muslim to hold the office of New York City mayor, following a campaign marked by mutual criticism between the two figures.
According to U.S. media reports, the meeting agenda is expected to include strengthening cooperation between the city and federal governments, improving public safety and crime prevention, and achieving financial and economic stability.
Given Mamdani’s background, immigration and cultural diversity are also expected to be key topics, with discussions likely to focus on promoting integration and civil rights within a framework of diversity and inclusion.
