Syrian Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa announced that Syria has signed a political cooperation declaration with the International Coalition to Defeat ISIS.
Al-Mustafa stated on the social media platform X that “the agreement is political and does not currently include any military components,” according to Reuters.
He affirmed that Syria is “a partner in combating terrorism and supporting regional stability.”
The move came during Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s visit to Washington and his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The U.S. Treasury Department decided to suspend sanctions imposed under the Caesar Act on Syria.
For its part, the U.S. State Department announced that “the suspension of Caesar Act sanctions on Syria will be partial and will last for 180 days, reflecting our continued commitment to easing sanctions on Syria. This replaces the previous Caesar Act sanctions waiver issued on May 23.”
The State Department added, “This suspension halts the enforcement of sanctions under the Caesar Act, except for specific transactions involving the governments of Russia and Iran or the transfer of goods, technology, software, money, financing, or services of Russian or Iranian origin.”
The Syrian Presidency reported that President al-Sharaa discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and address regional issues during his visit to Washington. It added that the foreign ministers of both countries attended the meeting.
After his meeting with al-Sharaa, President Trump said, “I have a good understanding with al-Sharaa, and I am confident that he will be able to carry out his duties.”
Trump added, “Al-Sharaa has a very good relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and we are working with Israel to improve relations with Syria.”
The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated that the United States reaffirmed its support for reaching a security agreement between Israel and Syria.
This followed a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaybani, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, held on the sidelines of President al-Sharaa’s visit to Washington.
