On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to cut federal funding to New York City if Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral race. In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump described Mamdani as a “communist,” saying his victory would leave the city with “zero chance of success or even survival.”
He added, “If Mamdani wins, it’s unlikely I’ll provide any federal funding—except for the bare minimum required by law.”
New Yorkers are heading to the polls today to elect a new mayor. Polls show Mamdani leading significantly over former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is considered a long shot, prompting Trump to say that voting for Sliwa would essentially be “helping Mamdani.”
