U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani of the urgent need to disarm Iran-aligned armed factions in the country.
During their phone call, Rubio and Al-Sudani discussed efforts to finalize American commercial deals in Iraq. Rubio emphasized the necessity of disarming Iran-backed militias that undermine Iraq’s sovereignty.
The Secretary added that “Iran-backed militias in Iraq threaten the lives and businesses of both Americans and Iraqis and are looting Iraqi resources for the benefit of Tehran.”
Rubio concluded the call by reaffirming Washington’s commitment to “working closely with Iraqis to advance shared interests.”
