Greece Announces Imminent Launch of Direct Flights Between Baghdad and Athens.

Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Harry Theoharis confirmed on Monday the intention to launch direct flights between Baghdad and Athens, adding that there is a growing interest in involving Greek companies in Iraq’s Development Road Project.

In his speech during the activities of the Iraqi-Greek Committee for Various Sectors held at the Ministry of Construction, Theoharis stated, “My visit to Baghdad today comes as part of fulfilling the promise made by the prime ministers of Iraq and Greece on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which was to reactivate the joint committee between the two countries after a suspension of nearly 25 years.”

He added that “his country is working to revive the committee in order to strengthen the ties between the two nations,” noting that “friendly discussions were held on ways to enhance cooperation in several areas that previously connected us.”

He continued, “Both sides are excited to launch direct flights between Baghdad and Athens as soon as possible,” expecting this to happen by January next year.

Theoharis explained that “cooperation will cover various fields, including tourism, medical supplies, reconstruction, and other sectors.” He emphasized that “Greece is actively encouraging Greek companies to have a strong presence in Iraq” and revealed that “an economic and trade forum between Iraq and Greece will be held in the coming months to explore investment opportunities and expand areas of cooperation.”

He concluded, “Upon my return to Greece, I will open channels of dialogue with several Greek companies to discuss ways they can participate in development projects in Iraq, especially the Development Road Project, which offers promising opportunities for broader collaboration between the two countries.”
