U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he had spoken with the Palestinian group Hamas, announcing that they agreed to disarm. He warned, however, that if they do not, “we will take care of it.”
During a meeting at the White House with Argentine President Javier Milei, Trump stated, “I spoke to Hamas, and they told me they will disarm. If they don’t, we’ll take care of it.”
He added, “Hamas’s disarmament will happen quickly and possibly violently, and we’ll see whether they fulfill their commitments under the agreement.”
Trump noted that the talks with Hamas were conducted by top-level U.S. officials and said he had never seen such a strong desire for peace in the Middle East.
Previously, Hamas had declared its commitment to keeping its weapons and rejected any proposal for disarmament. A Hamas official, speaking anonymously to AFP, said, “The issue of surrendering weapons is off the table and not up for discussion.”
Last Thursday, Israel and Hamas signed an agreement in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, which includes a ceasefire, exchange of hostages and prisoners, and the entry of humanitarian aid.
Currently, the second phase of Trump’s proposed peace plan is under discussion, which includes Hamas’s disarmament and the future governance of the Gaza Strip.
