The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Thursday that 61 undocumented migrants have gone missing following the capsizing of a boat off Libya’s eastern coast.
In a statement posted on the platform X, the UNHCR said,
“A second tragic incident occurred off the coast of Tobruk. The boat was carrying 74 people; only 13 survived, while the rest are considered missing.”
This incident comes just days after 50 Sudanese migrants drowned and 24 others were rescued when another boat sank off Tobruk last Sunday, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Libya’s coasts, especially during the summer months, frequently witness deadly shipwrecks involving boats carrying undocumented migrants on perilous journeys toward Europe.
