High-Level Iraqi Delegation to Visit Russia Soon for Preliminary Nuclear Energy Agreement.

On Monday, a well-informed source revealed an upcoming visit by a high-level Iraqi delegation to Russia to prepare a preliminary agreement on peaceful nuclear energy.

The source explained that “Iraq is seeking to diversify its energy sources and reduce its dependence on oil by establishing a cooperation agreement with Moscow, which has extensive expertise in nuclear energy. This topic has been discussed during mutual visits between the two countries.”

He noted that “the delegation includes representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Electricity, Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the Atomic Energy Commission, as well as experts from the Ministry of Environment. They will visit Moscow this month to agree on the terms of the proposed agreement between both sides.”

The source added, “A member of the delegation is authorized to sign the preliminary agreement if all details are agreed upon.”

He clarified that “the agreement covers several areas, including Russia’s assistance in building nuclear power plants to generate electricity, providing nuclear fuel cycle services, and training local personnel to manage and operate nuclear facilities.”

He continued, “This cooperation is part of Iraq’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on oil. Russia has extensive experience in nuclear energy and has signed similar agreements with other countries, such as Mali and Burkina Faso, to promote peaceful nuclear energy cooperation and meet electricity needs.”

In recent years, discussions within Iraqi circles have focused on finding alternatives to oil and gradually transitioning to clean energy, especially in electricity generation.

Iraq has previously held talks with various countries regarding the establishment of peaceful nuclear power plants for multiple uses.

On Sunday, Iraq’s National Security Advisory revealed an upcoming visit by the Secretary of the Russian National Security Council to Baghdad in mid-month.

According to a statement from the media office of Iraq’s National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji received Russian Ambassador Elbrus Kutrashev in his office, where they discussed strengthening bilateral relations and prospects for joint cooperation in combating terrorism, exchanging information and expertise, and the anticipated visit of the Russian Security Council Secretary later this month.
